La “Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare”nasce nel 1970 con il preciso intento di diffondere gli autentici valori della tradizione del popolo campano. Lo straordinario successo che il gruppo ottiene al Festival di Spoleto del 1972 e del 1974 segna il suo lancio internazionale: da allora la NCCP ha ripetutamente partecipato a tutti i più importanti festivals d’Europa e d’oltreoceano,tra cui: Edimburgo, Helsinki, Berlino (Festwochen), Théatre des Nations (Caracas 1977, Amburgo 1979), Buenos Aires (Coliseum), Festival delle Fiandre, Zurigo, Salisburgo (Mozarteum), Parigi (Théatre de la Ville), Israele, Spoleto USA, Sydney (Opera House), Hong Kong, Singapore, Schwetzinger Festspiele (1990),Tokyo (Sogetsu Hall), Koeln (Opera), San Paolo(Sesc Pompeia 2001),Sofia (Sala Bulgaria 2001)Belgrado (Kolarca 2002),London (Riverside Studios) Monaco (Herculees Saal), Madrid, Barcellona (Palau de la Musica), Atene (Teatro Lycabettus 1997, e Dora Stratou 2002), Budapest (Teatro Talia 2003), Il Cairo (Teatro dell’Opera 2003).

Il gruppo ha alternato alla sua attività musicale anche quella teatrale, promuovendo e partecipando a numerosi spettacoli: La Cantata dei pastori, La canzone di Zeza, La Gatta Cenerentola, La Perla Reale, Sona sona….Per questo motivo Eduardo de Filippo li volle ospiti nel suo teatro, il San Ferdinando di Napoli…

Sono gli inizi degli anni ’90 esce un album di nuovi brani per la CGD “Medina”, da cui prende il titolo anche il tour che porta la NCCP in giro per il mondo, tra cui Cordoba, Caracas,Tokyo etc..etc. nel 2002 al festival di Sanremo presentano il Pe’ dispietto,che ottiene il prestigioso premio della Critica. Pubblicheranno in seguito “Tzigari ” e poi un live, “InCanto Acustico”,che raccoglie i brani più significativi del gruppo, registrati durante l’omonima tournè teatrale.

Pubblicano poi con la EMI “Pesce d”o mare”, nel quale il gruppo propone nuove contaminazioni con artisti di diversa matrice culturale. Da citare al riguardo la collaborazione con Angelo Branduardi e Zulù dei 99 Posse. Il 1999 si apre con una tournèe per le più importanti organizzazioni di rassegne di musica classica (GOG di Genova,Accademia S. Cecilia di Roma, Accademia Chigiana di Siena,Teatro Rossini di Pesaro,Camerata Musicale Barese,Teatro Bellini di Catania….)

a cui segue un Tour in Brasile. Nel 2001 esce il nuovo album dal titolo “La voce del grano” quest’album è risultato fra i primi 20 migliori cd del mondo nella classifica stilata dai giornalisti della “World Music Charts Europe”. Gli anni succesivi la NCCP si presenta alla scena internazionale con un tour mondiale, Sofia, Rabat, Casablanca,Atene,Salonicco e Belgrado, Islanda, Stoccolma, Helsinki, Washington, Spagna etc. A Dicembre 2005 è stato pubblicato il nuovo CD dal titolo “Candelora”,co-prodotto con RAI TRADE, e da questo nuovo Cd parte il nuovo spettacolo, presentato nei Teatri d’ Italia e del mondo,in questo lungo tour durato 2 anni la NCCP ha presentato il nuovo progetto musicale terminato in America Latina, tra cui ricordiamo Tucùman, Montevideo, Lima… etc… Il 2008 si apre ancora con il tour mondiale di candelora, terminato a gennaio 2009 a Volos, Grecia al festival internazionale di musica e teatro. In occasione del concerto al BMW Welt Auditorium di Monaco,viene registrato un album live. La NCCP ancora protagonista sulla scena mondiale, 2 concerti in Colombia, al Cartagena international music festival, ai quali hanno assistito oltre 2000 spettatori, entrambi trasmessi dalla televisione di stato colombiana.

La Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare in occasione dei suoi 50 anni di musica e concerti ha pubblicato un doppio cd “50 anni in buona compagnia” da cui prende il titolo anche il nuovo spettacolo che ha toccato diverse città italiane, Milano, Torino, Firenze, Aosta, Roma, Napoli etc. Il forte legame di amicizia con Pino Daniele, li porta a presentare alla manifestazione “pino è” la una versione di donna cuncetta molto particolare, il brano che Pino Daniele scrisse alla madre, il nostro modo di omaggiare ancora il nostro grande e caro amico.

Il 2019 si apre con un nuovo Tour “ Anime di Terra” che porterà la NCCP ancora in giro per l’Italia, tra festival e concerti, alternandosi al lavoro in studio per l’uscita di un nuovo cd.

Il 2020 si apre con la presentazione del cd Napoli 1534 tra moresche e villanelle, un album apprezzatissimo dalla critica italiana e estera, ultimo lavoro diretto e voluto dal compianto Corrado Sfogli direttore artistico della nccp,  edito da Squilibri.

“Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare” was formed in 1970 with the aim of promoting the traditions of the people of Campania (the Southern Italian region of which Naples is the capital).The extraordinary success gained at the Spoleto Festival in both 1972 and 1974 marks their launch on the international stage. Since then the NCCP frequently participated in all the most important festivals within and outside Europe. These include Edinburgh, Helsinki, Berlin (Festwochen), Théatre des Nations (Caracas 1977, Hamburg 1979), Buenos Aires (Coliseum), Festival of the Fiandres, Zurich, Salzburg (Mozarteum), Paris (Théatre de la Ville), Athens, Israel, Spoleto (USA), Sydney (Opera House), Hong Kong, Singapore, Schwetzingen Festspiele (1990),Tokyo (Sogetsu Hall), Koln (Opera), Sao Paulo(Sesc Pompeia 2001), Sofia (Sala Bulgaria 2001), Beograd (Kolarca 2002), London (Riverside Studios) Munich (Herculees Saal) and others.

The group has alternated its musical activities with theatre productions, promoting and participating in several shows, including: La Cantata dei Pastori, La Canzone di Zeza, La Gatta Cenerentola, La Perla Reale, Sona Sona and others. For this reason Eduardo De Filippo invited them to perform in his theatre, the San Ferdinando in Naples.

Let’s trace the steps of the group in more recent years:

It’s the beginning of the 90s, and the spirit and the concept are the same. A new album with original songs recorded for CGD successfully marks the return of the group after a long hiatus. The title is “Medina”, name of an old Neapolitan city gate as well as the Arabic holy city and of various Spanish towns, thereby encompassing in a single word intertwining different musical cultures beyond country and cultural boundaries. In 1992 the NCCP takes Medina on tour not only in Italy but also to Cordoba, Caracas and Tokyo, a world tour which is also the opportunity for new ideas and inspirations. But 1992 is also the year of their surprise participation in the Sanremo Festival of a song taken from Medina, “Pe’ dispietto”, which obtains the prestigious critics’ prize.

The NCCP story continues in the 90s with shows both in Italy and abroad – in 1993 in Greece at the Mediterranean International Festival and in 1994 in Ireland at the Dublin International Festival. At the beginning of 1995 they put out a new album, “Tzigari”, which effortlessly captures the new NCCP style, never looking back but always open to new voices and inspirations. In September 1996 they produce a live record, “InCanto Acustico”, which includes the most significant songs composed by the band to date, recorded during the theatre tour undertaken in the same year. In 1997 they sign a new deal with EMI which ends up with an album titled “Pesce d’o’ mare”, where the NCCP once more combine traditional Mediterranean melodies with original songs containing musical influences from diverse cultural backgrounds. Also noteworthy at this time is their collaboration with Angelo Branduardi and Zulù from the band 99 Posse.

With these artists the NCCP appeared at the 1st of May celebrations in Piazza San Giovanni in Rome and also in the most important theatres of Italy. The month of January 1999 opened with a tour for the most important classical music organizations in Italy – GOG in Genoa, Teatro Civico in La Spezia, Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Teatro Rossini in Pesaro, Camerata Musicale Barese, Teatro Bellini in Catania and others. The tour was widely acclaimed by public and critics alike. In 2000 they toured Brazil, where they played at the festival “Todos os cantos do mundo” at the theatre Sesc Pompeia in Sao Paulo. In 2001 they produced “La voce del grano”, printed by Forrest Hill and distributed by Harmony Music. In January 2002 the album was voted as one of the best 20 releases by the journalists of “World Music Charts Europe”. Also in 2002 the NCCP was invited to perform by the Italian Institutes of Culture in Sofia, Rabat, Casablanca, Athens, Thessalonica and Belgrade. In September of the same year they were invited by RAI Uno (Italian national television) to participate, together with Dionne Warwick and Andrea Bocelli, in celebrations, held in Sorrento, for the centenary of the song “Torna a Surriento”.In 2003 and 2004 the NCCP was invited to perform in Washington, Stoccolma, Helsinky and Iceland “Nasa Festival”

In 2005 in collaboration with Rai trade they came out with a new album titled “Candelora” and once again new shows in Italy and world: Perù, Ecuador, Chile, Spain, Austria, Greece …. In 2006/2008 the band toured extensively both in Italy and worldwide promoting the new record. In 2010 the highlight

was being invited by Mrs. Liselotte Orff (Carl Orff’s wife) to play in Germany. This led to a live show recorded at the BMW Welt Auditorium in Munich, available on CD. 2013 begins with some great gigs around the world, two shows at the International Music Festival held in Cartagéna (Colombia) which see the band playing in front of 3000 people and also streamed live on national TV. Then back to Europe, Luxembourg, Germany and Italy for a summer tour in all major cities.After the summer tour, the years ends with a series of concerts as a guest in concert Pino Daniele and then into the studio to work on new songs.

2020 opens with the presentation of the cd “Napoli 1534 tra Moresche e Villanelle”, an album highly appreciated by Italian and foreign critics, the latest work directed and wanted by the late Corrado Sfogli, artistic director of the NCCP, published by Squilibri.
